Meta data 3D
While putting together the previous Nicaragua slideshow using PhotoStory 3 (I was looking for something better) I came across this from Microsoft Labs. It's still very early but is very cool.
In a nut shell it can take multiple photos from anyone (or any camera) and map them into a 3D environment based upon the subject. So say you've got a few tourists that have taken photos of downtown NYC. Using this software you can re-create a 3D model of it as well as be able to zoom in as far as there are pics of detail. You can try the "Tech Preview" out on your browser as MS has a small download of St. Marks Square that lets you see it's power here: http://labs.live.com/photosynth/ There are many more "collections" you can look at too including some in Britain.
